2024 CE Audit Extension

June 1, 2024, marked the start of new CE Audit policies, including the CE audit extension. If you are currently in the CE audit extension here’s what you need to know:

  • Immediate Access: We hope you’ve already started reporting your CE programs and uploading the required documentation on your My Certification page. Please make sure to complete a minimum of 45 CE hours, including nine hours related to Sanitation and Safety and one hour on Professional Ethics, by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. CT on August 31.
  • Meeting Requirements: If you do not meet these requirements by the deadline, your certification will be terminated on September 1 or the next business day.
  • Review Period: From September 1 to October 31, CBDM will review your reported CE and uploaded documentation. During this period, you'll have the opportunity to address any issues identified by your auditor. Please ensure all recertification requirements are met by 11:59 p.m. CT on October 31 to avoid the termination of your CDM, CFPP certification on November 1. If you do not pass the audit, you will need to re-earn your certification before using the CDM, CFPP credential again. This means you must qualify for the CDM, CFPP Credentialing Exam under a current pathway of eligibility, submit an exam application with fees for review and approval, pass the exam, and activate your certification within one year of passing the exam.
  • CE Hours: Any extra CE hours you earn cannot be carried over to the next recertification period.
Remember, your auditor is here to help! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.

Next year marks a big anniversary for the CBDM Certification Program – 40 years! The Certified Dietary Manager credential began to take shape in 1985, becoming accredited in 1989. The CDM Credentialing Exam was originally offered as a paper and pencil exam, one Saturday in October each year.

In 1997, CBDM recognized the need within the industry for greater emphasis on sanitation and safety, and created a standalone, 75 question exam that was available to anyone, to identify foodservice professionals meeting competency standards for sanitation and safety. The Certified Food Protection Professional (CFPP) credential was borne and was optional for CDMs.

By the late 1990’s, health departments and surveyors placed much greater emphasis on sanitation and safety and began to request both the CDM and the CFPP for managers in charge of foodservice operations. In response, CBDM made the decision to require exam candidates to pass both exams to be able to earn the CDM credential and required all CDMs to take and pass the CFPP exam to retain their CDM credential. By 2001, everyone would become CDM, CFPPs. The response to this requirement was considered highly risky by other certification organizations, but CDMs understood what was at stake, and stepped up to the plate. By the deadline established, only 200 individuals opted not to pursue the CFPP and indicated it was because they were retiring within the following year. In 2007, CBDM consolidated the two exams into one longer exam and candidates who passed earned the CDM, CFPP credential in one fell swoop.

2013 brought a groundbreaking change to the CBDM Certification Program, with the move to computer-based testing. Instead of a paper and pencil exam offered on one day at 50 sites around the country, candidates could test over an 8-day period at 300 sites. Within a year, the exam became available Monday – Friday, year-round. In addition to the advantage of being able to schedule an exam at convenient times all year long, candidates are also able to get their exam results immediately.

It’s good to know how it all started, and great to see how far we’ve come! CBDM is always striving to ensure that the certification program meets the highest standards for excellence for foodservice professionals.
